Civil Intoxication / First edition in development

WHY WE’RE MAKING IT

When did talking about politics become taboo?

The goal of Civil Intoxication is to spark conversation among friends, family, or acquaintances on political topics in a lighthearted setting. While passion is encouraged, players should control their emotions: disagreeing on a topic is not grounds for hostility or disrespect. Keep it civil, have some drinks, and enjoy the game!

How to play.

Three card categories, one shared rule: keep it civil. Play with the drinking rules below and add the optional point system if your group wants to keep score.

Set out the cards.

Keep Debate, Agree or Disagree, and Trivia in their own piles so each category is easy to reach.

Decide on points.

Scoring is optional. If you’re keeping score, qualifying cards are worth 3 points for Debate, 2 for Trivia, and 1 for Agree or Disagree.

Keep it civil.

Bring your passion, but leave hostility out of it. Interruptions, unnecessary name-calling, and belittling the opposition each mean taking a drink.

THE RULES, BY CARD TYPE

Find your kind of conversation.

CATEGORY 01

Debate

Pick a side. Make your case.

Optional scoring · 3 points

Play the card

  1. Draw a card from the Debate pile and read it aloud to the group. Tell everyone which side you will argue.
  2. Count down from three. At the end of the countdown, anyone who wants to argue the opposite side raises a hand or says they are on the other side.
  3. If more than one person volunteers, choose your opponent. If no one volunteers, pick someone to defend the opposing side.
  4. Agree on how much time each debater gets and whether to include a rebuttal period. For example: one minute for opening statements and 30 seconds for a rebuttal.

How it plays out

  • After the debate, the players who did not debate vote on the winner.
  • The losing debater drinks.
  • If the vote is tied, everyone cheers in the middle and takes a drink together.

Keeping score? Optional

The winning debater keeps the card and earns 3 points.

CATEGORY 02

Agree or Disagree

Three, two, one. Take a side.

Optional scoring · 1 point

Play the card

  1. Pick an Agree or Disagree card and read the prompt aloud to the group.
  2. Count down from three. At the end of the countdown, everyone reveals their answer together: thumbs up or say “agree”; thumbs down or say “disagree”.

How it plays out

  • Anyone in the minority takes a drink.
  • If there is a tie, everyone cheers in the middle and takes a drink together.

Keeping score? Optional

If the cardholder is in the majority, they keep the card and earn 1 point. If they are in the minority, the card goes to the bottom of the pile.

CATEGORY 03

Trivia

Know it? Or put someone on the spot.

Optional scoring · 2 points

Play the card

  1. Pick a Trivia card and choose whether to answer the question yourself or choose someone else to answer it.

How it plays out

  • If you answer the question yourself and get it right, choose someone from the group to drink.
  • If you choose someone else to answer and they get it right, you drink.
  • If you choose someone else to answer and they get it wrong, they drink.

Keeping score? Optional

The player who answers correctly keeps the card and earns 2 points.

GENERAL DRINKING RULES

Keep the debate spirited. Keep the table civil.

A SAMPLE TURN · ILLUSTRATIVE

A split table. A shared cheers.

Imagine four players revealing their answers to an Agree or Disagree prompt: two thumbs up, two thumbs down. It’s a tie, so everyone cheers in the middle and takes a drink together. This is an illustrative example of the tie rule.
